WPI has been cooling lasers since 1993. Processes that require lasers are intricate and demand a steady constant flow of chilled water. Many of these processes have a very critical load that is perfect for Whaley's modular chiller systems. A modular chiller system provides ample redundancy with multiple chiller units available at any given time. In the event of required maintenance on one of the units, back-up units are always waiting and ready to cool the loop. Packaged chiller units are available as well in addition to pump tank systems.
Application Description: There are two types of service duty on laser chillers. 1. Constant ON laser: Contant on lasers need a stable source of chilled water that is constantly flowing. Applications of this type of laser can vary from simple laser cutting to military satellite tracking systems. Constant ON lasers tend to be larger in size, and require 5KW to 300KW chilled water capacity. 2. Intermittent use or burst lasers: Burst lasers will cycle through their burst process a certain amount of times per day. In some cases, the burst lasts for a few seconds. These lasers typically fire for short periods of time, sometimes as little as a few seconds, and then returning to standby mode. Common applications for these laser applications are typically found in the medical and bio-science industries. With both types of laser applications above, stability of the entering fluid from the chiller must be present to achieve maximized performance and reliability from the laser system. Legacy's PACT (package) and EST (Split) tank model chiller are ideal for these applications. These two families of chillers use a specially designed integrated tank and pumping system to maintain a constant chiller, leaving fluid temperature to the laser.
